How can macros help you lose fat?
Macronutrients are the three nutrients that provide you with most of your energy:
Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats.
With all of the buzz out there around low carb, low fat or high fat, and high protein, it can become very confusing to know what to eat if you are looking to shed some pounds. For weight loss and general health, it is important that you are eating all three of the macronutrients. Studies have shown that there is no “magic” ratio of macronutrients you should consume to get rid of those pesky extra pounds. It is more important to eat the right or “healthy” macros and to decrease the amount of calories you intake. By eating the healthy macros, you will likely consume less calories and give your body the energy and nutrients it needs.
Here are some tips to ensure you are eating the right macronutrients.
Macronutrient #1: Carbohydrates Skip the refined carbs like white pasta, white rice and bread and choose complex carbs, like leafy greens, whole grains and root veggies. Examples include: broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, squash, dark leafy greens, green beans, onions, cucumbers, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, potatoes and quinoa.
Macronutrient #2: Protein Avoid or limit greasy, too fatty or processed proteins like chicken wings, burgers, hot dogs, bacon, and lunch meats. Instead, choose fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, herring), cod, lean grass-fed beef, turkey, chicken and eggs. Plant based foods that are also considered good sources of protein include seeds and nuts, beans, lentils, soy products like tofu, brown rice, quinoa and oats. Macronutrient #3: Fat Limit or avoid saturated fats found in lard, butter, and shortening and trans fats found in fried foods, margarine, vegetable shortening and baked goods. Ensure you eat plenty of healthy fats which are important for healthy hormone levels, metabolism, and vitamin absorption. Foods high in essential fatty acids include: coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, almonds, brazil nuts and macadamia nuts.
